The Kawah Ijen volcano on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso is home to one of the world's most surreal natural phenomena — the electric-blue sulphuric flames that blaze from the crater's fumaroles during the pre-dawn hours. The trek to the crater rim begins around midnight, passing through a dense forest reserve and volcanic ridgeline before descending into the caldera to witness the ethereal blue fire at close range. As dawn breaks, the turquoise sulphuric lake and surrounding crater walls reveal themselves in stunning detail. The total return hike is approximately 6 km. Guided night treks are arranged from Banyuwangi, with seaplane transfer from Bali cutting the journey to minutes. A truly bucket-list experience in East Java.
